The Evolution of Adiabatic Supernova Remnants in a Turbulent, Magnetized Medium

چکیده

We present the results of three dimensional calculations for the MHD evolution of an adiabatic supernova remnant in both a uniform and turbulent interstellar medium using the RIEMANN framework of Balsara. In the uniform case, which contains an initially uniform magnetic field, the density structure of the shell remains largely spherical, while the magnetic pressure and synchrotron emissivity are enhanced along the plane perpendicular to the field direction. This produces a bilateral or barrel-type morphology in synchrotron emission for certain viewing angles. We then consider a case with a turbulent external medium as in Balsara & Pouquet, characterized by vA(rms)/cs = 2. Several important changes are found. First, despite the presence of a uniform field, the overall synchrotron emissivity becomes approximately spherically symmetric, on the whole, but is extremely patchy and time-variable, with flickering on the order of a few computational time steps. This is reminiscent of the Cas A observations of Anderson & Rudnick, although that remnant has a much more complicated pre-supernova evolution than what is considered here. We suggest that the time and spatial variability of emission in early phase SNR evolution provides information on the turbulent medium surrounding the remnant. The interaction of the outwardly-propagating SNR shock with interstellar turbulence is shown to amplify the turbulence in the post-shock region, thereby having important consequences for relativistic particle acceleration. The shockturbulence interaction is also shown to be a strong source of helicity-generation and, therefore, has important consequences for magnetic field generation. We compare our calculations to the Sedov-phase evolution, and discuss how the emission characteristics of SNR may provide a diagnostic on the nature of turbulence in the pre-supernova environment. Long-Term Evolution of Supernova Remnants in Magnetized Interstellar Medium

The evolution of supernova remnants (SNRs) is studied, with particular attention to the effect of magnetic fields with axisymmetric two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations. The evolution of magnetic SNRs is the same as non-magnetic ones in the adiabatic Sedov stage. After a thin shell is formed, the shell is driven by the pressure of the hot interior gas (bubble). Evolution in the pre...

Thermal X-ray Emission of the Remnants of Aspherical Supernova Explosions

Evolution of adiabatic remnants of an aspherical supernova explosion in uniform medium are considered. Thermal X-ray emission of such remnants are investigated. It is shown that integral thermal X-ray characteristics (X-ray luminosity and spectrum) of the objects do not allow us to reveal the assymetry in the explosion because these characteristics are close to their Sedov counterparts. Surface...

Turbulence and Magnetic Field Amplification in Supernova Remnants: Interactions between a Strong Shock Wave and Multi-phase Interstellar Medium

We examine MHD simulations of the propagation of a strong shock wave through the interstellar two-phase medium composed of small-scale cloudlets and diffuse warm neutral medium in two-dimensional geometry. The pre-shock two-phase medium is provided as a natural consequence of the thermal instability that is expected to be ubiquitous in the interstellar medium. We show that the shock-compressed ...

The imprint of presupernova evolution on supernovae remnants

The evolution of type Ia supernova binary system progenitors is highly uncertain. Several evolutionary models predict that the accretion of mass onto the white dwarf is accompanied by mass ejection from the binary in the form of a powerful wind, but very few observations have been made during the initial phase of formation of supernovae remnants, when the interaction of supernova ejecta with pr...

Supernova remnants in molecular clouds: on cosmic ray electron spectra

The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999) for such SNRs can naturally lead to th...
